Winnipeg Homes and Lifestyles

Apparently now Thursday’s are for reminiscing about the past.  So I’ll try and share something from my past with you on Thursdays.

Winnipeg Homes and Lifestyles last edition was the summer of 1998 and my shot of the Pelican Beach Golf and Entertainment Centre in Gimli, Manitoba  made the cover.

Harferd Productions published the magazine and it was owned by Fred Glazerman.   He was larger than life with a heart of gold.   Sadly Fred passed away Tuesday, April 4, 2000 after a 19 month battle with cancer.  But I can tell you this man lived life to the fullest!

I photographed for the magazine for about 4 years and loved the diversity. Everything from Portraits, Interiors, Exteriors, and landscapes.  For this particular shot Fred and I drove out to Gimli in his rather large convertible, top down, and the wind blowing.  I remember thinking….wow I have a great job! Really, does it get any better?   We rented a boat and captain to take us out on Lake Winnipeg, the water was very choppy and it was hard to get a good shot with the hasselblad (medium format film camera).  Winnipeg Homes and Lifestyles

They ended up using this shot from the shore line.  I loved the shot,  but was disappointed they didn’t keep it straight!  There’s my evil eye again…. Magazine’s were only 3.00 in 1998!

Happy Birthday!

I take many portraits  I always ask why are you having your portrait taken today?  I hear all kinds of reasons, but this one really made me smile….

The answer was “Because it’s my birthday”!  In 25 years of photographing people this is a first for me.  It got me to  think how nice to have your portrait taken on your birthday.  It’s a present to yourself.

Virginia is a very traditional person, and only wanted a plain gray background.  I convinced her to try a few other backgrounds with a little life to them…..and this was her favourite.

cheers to Virginia on her Birthday!!!

Welcome Wagon Bridal Show!

I was asked by Karen Grant of Aylee Consulting to photograph the Welcome Wagon Bridal show on April 6, 2014 at the Radison Hotel in Winnipeg.   I’ve never been to a welcome wagon event, nor have I advertised my services with a booth.  This show was all new to me. I decided to take on the challenge  and promote my wedding photography.   I invited the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation to share tablespace as I’ve partnered with them to raise  money.  For every wedding I book I’ll donate $100.  to breast cancer.  CBCF also supplied 3 volunteers to help me with the crowds!

kiss for a cure   is a wonderful program for couples to raise money for breast cancer.

Here’s how my table looked with Adria a volunteer from CBCF

Booth at Welcome Wagon Bridal Show April 6 2014

I was amazed at all the beautiful fashion’s, jewelry, and flowers. Kerri Salki from 102.3 FM  did an amazing job hosting the fashion show.  She kept the program entertaining and was very informative about the products we were seeing.  The models, truly did a fantastic job.  Even the little kids were adorable, especially one little boy who struck a dance pose everytime he stopped

I’ve been photographing weddings since 1990! (I started when I was 5  LOL)  Weddings have really changed over the years.  Even the style of wedding photography. It used to be very formal and somewhat stiff, not a joking matter….very serious!  I look at my parents wedding photographs from 1958 and they look sad…hardly a smile.   Perhaps digital photography has brought a carefree attitude towards capturing that special day.   Now wedding photographs are taken in back alleys with graffiti and garbage, sunflower/wheat fields,   water,  greenery, etc….   of course the blown out highlight from the sun (sun glare) and washed out photo’s are  very popular right now.    When I went to school that was considered “bad lighting”  oh all the photos I threw out because of sunglare. Now it’s considered creative!

One thing is certain, I’ve always tried to bring out personalities in the people I photograph.  I really don’t care where we photograph your wedding, just as long as it has meaning for you!   If you’re quiet and shy and don’t like having your photo taken, I’m not going to make you do something you’re not comfortable with.  You’re  hiring me to create lasting memories to pass on to generations.  There should be photographs that show the person you are, and the love you have for each other.  We can be silly but we should also capture some classic moments.

I really enjoyed meeting all the venders, potential clients and of course the models.I’d like to congratulate all the engaged couples I met at the welcome wagon bridal show!

I uploaded all the images to my web site, if you’d like the passcode please email me…

Rolls-Royce for hire in Winnipeg

I recently had coffee with Reginald Bartlette – owner of    RRR EVENT SERVICES   (aka Regency Rolls Royce) and a stunning porcelain white wedding  and bridal car.

His company  provides  first class cars-for-hire in Winnipeg, specializing in Classic (air conditioned) Rolls Royce motorcar with personal chauffeur.  Refined, comfortable & spacious, these are truly a fine example of what luxury cars should be!!  Rolls-Royce have become synonymous with excellence and prestige.  Perfect for a special day.

This 5-seater, 4-passenger hand built Rolls-Royce was manufactured specifically to be larger and more spacious in the back seating area, known as the ‘lounge’. With high ceilings and flat floors allowing for ease of entry and exit. Surely a wise choice for ladies (or brides) with extravagant or classic dresses that require  ease of access, as well as extra leg room. Corporate Executives will also appreciate these finer points, as well as the quiet ride. Even when parked, these beautiful motorcars radiate style and charisma.

Perfect for every occasion, particularly for weddings, engagements, anniversaries, birthdays, grads, the symphony, and any other important event where making the right impression is paramount.

Arrive in style at your next important private event or business function!

Photographing CUTE KIDS!!!

Sometimes kids are a little shy with strangers.  But not Josiah, I had the best time photographing him.  He was the sunshine of my day… I  love this image so much, It will be a sample in my presentation room! 048

Why do I love to photograph kids?  They  don’t care if you photograph them. Even when they are playing with their favourite toy.  Who said every photo of a child had to be staring straight at you with a big smile?  I prefer the type of photos that show personality.  When a parent say’s “oh I like it but he’s not smiling”  I ask them if they know what the most famous smile in the world is?   Of course the question stumps a few people…..   The Mona Lisa is famous because of her “non” smile!

012

Sometimes kids ham it up and just give you a expression that is priceless.Thank goodness I have a quick finger!

008

Kids never criticize how many  wrinkles they have or make comment on how their thighs look.  They don’t know about photoshop or ask to take a few years off. They just want to see themselves, they accept themselves and if they don’t like it they will tell you!   I sometimes wish more of my adult clients could be like children 🙂

Having a heart around Valentines day….

So is Valentines day just for lovers? Flowers/Chocolate/jewelry ?  I was going to purchase myself flowers from Costco but refrained.  This Valentines Day I decided  to reflect on everything I LOVE in life.  Seeing as I’m a single gal I have no choice but to think of what I LOVE!   When I think of LOVE I immediately think of my LOVE for my family + a few close friends.  Then it’s my LOVE of photography that has been with me since I was 13 years old.   I remember the little hairs on the back of my neck standing up when I developed my very first black and white print.  It was magic, and I was hooked!  I still have that print around here somewhere…  my LOVE of chocolate lead me to Chocolatier Constance Popp where I purchased 3 chocolates for myself…  They were a little pricey at 2.25 each, but I must say I really enjoyed them, I’ve never tasted anything like them before!  Absolutely delicious.  choc

Then there is LOVE for mankind.  Today I took my mom for a MRI, so as I waited I went to a second hand shop looking for props.  I saw a young man that appeared to be down and out, his coat was well worn and ripped.  He had picked out a sweater but didn’t have enough money to purchase it.  He pleaded with the clerk to keep it on hold for him until he had enough money.  But no way could they do it.

My heart just broke when I heard his story of being cold and it was the perfect sweater…….  The sweater fit nicely under his torn ripped coat and was thick enough to keep him warm.  I asked a different clerk how much it was….  a mere 8.00.    I thought, I’m going to buy this sweater for him and put 10 bucks on the table where he was standing. I didnt’ say anything but they both knew what I was doing…. I just smiled.  I wasn’t expecting change, but he insisted on giving me the 2.00 back.     It felt good for my Valentine heart to show a little love to a stranger and pay it forward.
