Happy Earth Day!

I put an advertisement in the Winnipeg Free Press this past Saturday.

Photography by Michele will be destroying  negatives from 1987- present.  If you would like to purchase your negatives, please contact by May 1, 2013.

A former student of mine told me I should “make” something with them.   Now I’m creative but have to admit not very crafty!   I did what any inquisitive mind would do, I searched google.  I was kind of amazed at what I saw……  2 3 4 5 images imgres 1

Very Cool ideas!!!!

I have a few 35 mm negatives (which is shown in the photos)  Most of the negatives I have (15 boxes of them) are 120mm taken with a hasselblad!  So today is EARTH DAY and I hate to see all these negatives in the landfill.  I don’t think I have the right to just give negatives to  crafters to create jewelry and lamps….. or do I?  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!   Maybe I’ll just have a  big bonfire……

Photographing Interiors

I really enjoy photographing architecture, especially interiors. Your not so dependant on the weather.  I’ve photographed many hotels and business and   I’ve done some work for real estate agents in the past.  I’d like to introduce Marion Dawson, Winnipeg’s newest real estate agent with Sutton Group – Kilkenny.  I photographed her first listing!

She requested that images  be in HDR (high dynamic range) .  I think they look pretty awesome, and really show off this cute little house.

iphone 5

It’s been a crazy week!   I covered a national event at canad inns polo park.  Environmental portraits of  4 doctors who have won awards in their field was interesting. Yesterday it was my pleasure to photograph Billie Flynn, a test pilot for Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company in Fort Worth, Texas! I took a awesome photo of him wearing a jets jersey….LOL

In between my busy professional life I started teaching my last of four courses at red river college.  I took my students to The Forks and decided to play with the camera on my new iphone 5.   This is my first apple product, and I must admit I love it!   Here are a few photos of the forks out of the camera….. oh I mean phone

before and after eOn the left is the before  through glass! On the right a little photoshop to remove glare and straighten the buildings.  The building on the far right is the Human Rights Museum.IMG_0014rte

The assiniboine river still has a ton of ice and snow on it…..  where is spring?

The iphone 5 camera sure beats the blackberry there is no comparison.

I can probably sell my little point and shoot camera + my black berry.  No use for either of them now!

Steel your art away…….

With Valentines day just around the corner I love the play on words with my latest client “Steel your art away”

I spent most of the day with Jan and was very impressed at her latest works or art.  Jan is a talented  artist who taps into her rural roots and morphs recycled metal into original works of art.  I love how she attaches some of her pieces onto Tyndall stone.  The stone is locally found just north of Winnipeg.

Perhaps your valentine could use a piece of art  instead of the flowers and candy which just vanish.  Steal their heart away with something they will keep forever!   For more information    check out her web site http://www.steelyourartaway.com

I’m not really a sports photographer, but every once in a while I help one.  Yesterday, I got up early and knew I’d be spending all day at Pan Am Swimming Pool in Winnipeg.  There was a diving competition going on.  You think it’s hard to capture hockey or football players?  Those guys move slow compared to divers!

anyway…. I looked out my office window and saw this beautiful calming light. I just knew it had to be cold outside.  -32C with the windchill!  I was somewhat happy to spend 11 hours in the warm humid air at Pan Am, and was thrilled my car started at the end of the day 🙂

The value of a family portrait – priceless

This awesome family traveled from different parts of  Canada to be together for the holiday season.  I was extremely honored to take their first family portrait.   After the portrait session, one of the daughters gave me a card that read:

Michele,

“Thanks so much for giving us the best gift ever received. No words can express how grateful we are”.

There was also a  $100 bill in it.  At first I thought it was money to go towards portraits, but later found out it was my tip.   Needless to say I was shocked and tried to put it towards their portraits  without success!

Every year I have my favorite portraits I’ve taken for different reasons, this one is at the top of the list.  Not because of the enormous tip, but because it’s a family that came together for their first and last portrait.  You see someone in this portrait has terminal cancer.  It pulls at your heart string even if you don’t know the person.   I often wonder why families don’t have professional portraits taken more often, but I truly enjoy creating 012a lasting memory for them….. and that is priceless.

A place to call home.

As a Winnipeg photographer I’m very central in Canada, and I freelance  for national  companies.   I have no idea where my images will show up, or which ones they will choose for publication.  I guess I’ll have to purchase the new Canada West Foundation book to see which of images made the cut!

The following a is a note I received from a company!

Hi Everyone,

I was sent a PDF version on the book from the CWF shoot,  It looks amazing and everyone should be proud of their work.   Michael and I are grateful to have such an amazing team working for us…..Congratulations

At this time hard-copy books can be purchased through their website at www.cwf.ca.
