Charcuterie Boards

What is it about a charcuterie board that is so appetizing? They are visually appealing and are a delicious spread of various cured meats, cheeses, fruits, nuts, and other accompaniments. It’s a popular choice for appetizers, snacks, or as the center piece of a social gathering. I could seriously eat one for dinner everyday if my waist line would allow it!

I recently did a photoshoot for Diva Delights and created this charcuterie board using 5 different crackers. I was a bit limited to what I could put on this small board, but you can typically put the following:

  1. Cured Meats: Various types of cured meats such as prosciutto, salami, chorizo, coppa, and pastrami are common choices. They offer a range of flavors and textures.
  2. Cheeses: An assortment of cheeses, including soft cheeses like brie and goat cheese, semi-soft cheeses like gouda and cheddar, and hard cheeses like parmesan and manchego. You can also incorporate blue cheese or cheese with different flavor profiles for variety.
  3. Fresh Fruits: Sliced fruits like grapes, figs, apples, pears, and berries add a touch of sweetness and balance to the savory elements.
  4. Dried Fruits: Apricots, dates, or raisins can provide a sweet contrast to the salty and savory items.
  5. Nuts: Almonds, walnuts, or pecans are often included for their crunch and rich flavor.
  6. Bread and Crackers: Slices of baguette, breadsticks, and various types of crackers are used as a base for pairing with the meats and cheeses.
  7. Pickles and Olives: Gherkins, pickled onions, and various types of olives can provide a briny, tangy element to the board.
  8. Condiments: Mustards, honey, and chutneys can be added for dipping or drizzling over the meats and cheeses.
  9. Spreads: Pâté, hummus, or other spreads can add depth and flavor to the board.
  10. Garnishes: Fresh herbs, like rosemary or thyme, and edible flowers can be used for decoration and extra flavor.

When assembling a charcuterie board, consider the visual presentation by arranging items in an aesthetically pleasing manner. Use a wooden board, slate, or a large platter as the base. Feel free to get creative and adapt the ingredients to your preferences and what’s in season. Charcuterie boards are a flexible and customizable option for entertaining, making them a popular choice for parties, wine tastings, and other social events.
